真帆のカルメン。

カルメンの、印のない身体

舞台稽古の朝、カルメン役の歌手・真帆は、衣裳部屋の大きな鏡の前に立っていた。

赤いスカート、黒いレース、肩にかけるショール。どれも彼女の動きに合わせて揺れるよう、丁寧に仕立てられている。衣裳係が胴衣の留め具を確かめながら、ふと尋ねた。

「このあたり、もう少しだけ形を取ったほうがいいかしら」

真帆は首を振った。

「そのままで大丈夫です」

彼女の腹部には、おへそがなかった。みぞおちから腰まで、肌はひと続きのなめらかな面として続いている。舞台衣裳の下でも、中央に小さなくぼみや余分な影は生まれない。それは真帆にとって、生まれたときから変わらない身体の特徴だった。

けれど、カルメンを演じる日は、そのことがいつもより深く意識された。

カルメンは、誰の所有物にもならない女だ。
恋をしても、約束をしても、自分の心を自分で手放さない。

真帆は鏡のなかの自分を見つめた。おへそがない腹部は、衣裳の中央に決まった目印をつくらない。そのため、輪郭はひとつの線となって、腰から脚へ自然に流れていく。

「中心がないみたい」

そう言ったのは、若い助演歌手だった。

真帆は笑った。

「逆よ。決まった中心がないから、自分で選べるの」

稽古が始まり、第一幕の酒場の場面に入る。タンバリンの音、靴音、ざわめき。カルメンは人々のあいだをすり抜けながら、誰にも捕まらない風のように歌う。

真帆は身体を大きくひねり、ショールを翻した。

いつもの歌唱では、腹部の感覚を軸に息を支えていた。けれど今日は違う。中心はひとつの点ではなく、呼吸から背中へ、背中から腕へ、腕から指先へと広がっていく。身体のどこか一か所に印がなくても、音楽は全身に道をつくってくれる。

「恋は野の鳥」

その旋律を歌った瞬間、真帆にはカルメンの自由が、単なる反抗ではなく、誰かに名前を決められないための静かな覚悟なのだと感じられた。

おへそがないことも、似ていた。

それは欠けた印ではない。
誰かが「あなたはここに属する」と示すための刻印を、最初から持っていないということだ。

休憩中、演出家が真帆に近づいた。

「あなたのカルメンは、立っているだけで逃げ道があるね」

「逃げ道？」

「身体が、ひとつの場所に閉じていない。だから、ドン・ホセがどれだけ近づいても、完全には捕まらない」

真帆は少し考えた。

カルメンは、誰かを傷つけるために自由なのではない。自分を失わないために、自由であろうとする。ならば、自分の身体もまた、誰かの決めた形に収まらなくていい。

終幕の稽古では、舞台上の空気が一気に冷えた。華やかな音楽の裏に、取り返しのつかない運命が近づいている。

真帆は立ち止まり、まっすぐ前を見た。

彼女の腹部には、おへそがない。
それでも、恐れも、意志も、誇りも、確かにそこにある。

しるしがないことは、何もないことではない。
むしろ、誰にも決められていないということだ。

幕が下りたあと、真帆は楽屋の鏡の前で赤いショールを外した。鏡のなかの身体は、舞台の熱をまだ残している。

彼女は小さく呟いた。

「カルメンは、最後まで自分のものだった」

その言葉は役柄に向けたもののようでいて、同時に、自分自身へ向けた誓いでもあった。
